Shaping a culture where colleagues feel encouraged to raise their concerns, free from fear of victimisation and confident that those concerns will be listened to and acted on, is a vital part of any business ethics programme. Yet getting buy in and support for the necessary investment is often a challenge.

In this event, Professor Kyle Welch of George Washington University shared some surprising insights from his research on whistleblowing which reinforce the business case for encouraging people to speak up. We also heard from Dr. Henrietta Hughes OBE, the National Guardian for Freedom to Speak Up for the NHS, who shared insights from her work to make sure speaking up (and listening up) becomes business as usual to effect cultural change in health.  She leads, trains and supports a network of over 650 Freedom to Speak Up Guardians in England who ensure workers can speak up about any issues impacting on their ability to do their job.
