Why do good people do bad things? Unconscious bias – the Starbucks Story Supporter only

Business Ethics Network (BEN) meeting

Book event now

We are excited to begin the year with an exploration of the question – why do good people do bad things?

In spite of best efforts to employ the best people and create leading E&C programmes to support and empower employees, misconduct and ethical lapses persist. According to the IBE Ethics at Work Survey 2018, 24% of UK-based employees had witnessed some form of misconduct in their workplace over the previous 12 months!

In this session we will explore the human side of the equation, and are delighted to announce that Starbucks will be facilitating the conversation – sharing their experience of facing a very public misstep, and subsequently stopping trading for an entire afternoon to engage all staff in conversation to understand unconscious bias and look for ways to counteract its influence. The meeting will also cover the subsequent actions taken and lessons learned to ensure that this wasn’t a one-time intervention, with no follow up.

What are Business Ethics Network (BEN) meetings?

What are BEN meetings?

Our network meetings, which happen regularly throughout the year, are the pillars around which the community is built. These invitation-only events are usually focused on a specific topic and are led by a member or members of the network who candidly share their experience and pose probing questions for group discussion.

All network meetings are hosted and facilitated under the Chatham House Rule by the IBE.

Who are BEN meetings for?

These meetings are both practitioner-led and practitioner-focused, with invitations only extended to those responsible for the ethics and compliance programme in their organisation (which must have more than 250 employees). Invitees are, however, free to recommend alternates / subject-matter experts from their organisation to attend either with them, or in their place. Registrations are limited to 2 participants per organisation per meeting.

Why attend a BEN meeting?

Network meetings are a unique opportunity to join the conversation to discuss the challenges, issues and successes of embedding ethical values within your organisation, with your peers.
