Understanding Business Ethics

Following a long career of leadership, teaching and research in the higher education sector, and having been a Trustee of the IBE, Chris joined the staff in 2019. As part-time Associate Director, he contributes to the leadership of the Institute and to the design and delivery of our research and thought leadership, advisory services and training.

Chris is Emeritus Professor at the University of Huddersfield, where he was previously Professor of Accounting (1996-2016), Professor of Financial Ethics (2016-2019) and Dean of the Business School (2008-2016). He joined Huddersfield after ten years lecturing at the University of Oxford. He has also been a Visiting Professor at Leeds University’s Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied Centre, the University of Bergamo (Italy) and the University of the Basque Country, Bilbao (Spain).

He is internationally recognised for his contributions to business ethics, especially his pioneering work on financial ethics. In 2013 he was awarded the University of Huddersfield’s first DLitt (Doctor of Letters, a higher doctorate) in recognition of his contribution to the advancement of knowledge in business and financial ethics.

He is the author of more than 70 journal papers, has edited three books and has written many book chapters and other publications. He served 10-year terms as Editor of the journal Business Ethics: A European Review (2004-2013) and as a member of the Ethics Standards Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (2009-2018).

Guen coordinated the work of the Research Hub and conducted research and wrote on a variety of business ethics topics, including IBE surveys, briefing and reports. She advised organisations on how to make their code of ethics and policies more effective and conducted benchmarking exercises on specific issues.

She delivered bespoke training sessions, as well as talks and presentations on the IBE research. She was secretary to Professionals against Corruption, at the IBE (PaC, at IBE), which brings together professionals from real estate, legal and accounting professions to prevent corruption.

Before joining the IBE, she collaborated with the inter-university centre for business ethics and corporate social responsibility EconomEtica in developing the code of ethics for the Italian Association of Management Consultants and worked for CSR Europe, a European CSR Business Network based in Brussels. She holds a master’s degree in Business Ethics and CSR from the University of Trento in Italy.

As the head of the research function at the Institute; this involves interpreting survey work and overseeing the comparative work the IBE does for organisations who ask for comparative work to be done on aspects of their ethics policies.

Simon has worked in the paper industry and run the UK arm of an international association focusing on Anglo-North American relations.

Simon has an honours degree in Economics and Political Science from Trinity College, Dublin.
