The IBE launched an important report on diversity, groupthink and the need for fresh thinking and wider life experience on boards.

The report has been written with the help of Deborah Gilshan, Founder, The 100% Club, who has made a major contribution to promoting gender balance on boards. The Report reflects on the lessons learned from the decade-long push on gender diversity and looks ahead to the efforts to address other dimensions of diversity. Simply seeking to meet targets from a compliance perspective will not lead to long term, sustainable change that addresses groupthink. Boards need to see diversity as a route to more effective decision-making and an improved board culture.

The report ends with a series of practical recommendations as to how a board can embrace cognitive and experiential diversity and unlock the sustainable business benefits from making systemic rather than cosmetic changes.

The webinar was chaired by the IBE’s Associate Director Mark Chambers who commissioned the report. We heard from the author, Deborah Gilshan, who outlined the key findings of the report and the practical recommendations that we are putting forward to help boards see diversity as a route to more effective decision-making and an improved board culture. We were also joined by Jon Miller, Founder of Open For Business and Dr Owen Williams OBE, Chief Executive of Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust who shared their personal perspectives on diversity and observations on the IBE’s report and recommendations.
