The Institute of Business Ethics heard with
sadness of the death of its patron, Dr Zaki Badawi KBE, Principal of the Muslim
College.Dr Badawi was involved in the IBE from its inception, first as Chief
Imam of the Central Mosque and then as Principal of the Muslim College he founded.
He accepted the role as one of IBE's patrons with energy and commitment. As
part of his work, Dr Badawi negotiated with the Bank of England and Treasury to
establish the UK's first licensed Islamic financial institutions, such as mortgages
compliant with Islamic law, which opposes the paying of interest. He argued that
these were classic examples of allowing people to follow their deeply-held beliefs
while at the same time playing a full part in society. Speaking at an event
at the IBE, Dr Badawi once said: "Business without ethics is like a body
without a soul. It soon deteriorates, it soon becomes full of germs, it becomes
worthless." "He will be sorely missed," said Philippa Foster
Back OBE, Director of the Institute.
