Journals

The four main journals in the field are the Business Ethics Quarterly (BEQ), the Journal of Business Ethics (JBE), Business Ethics: A European Review (BE:ER), and Journal of Business Ethics Education (JBEE). In addition, there are specialist journals such as the Business and Society Review, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Corporate Governance: the International Journal of Business and Society and Philosophy of Management that are also directly concerned with business ethics issues, as well as an increasing occurrence of business ethics related papers in mainstream or specialist management journals such as the Academy of Management Review and Long Range Planning (including special editions devoted to business ethics topics).

Of the four main journals, it is probably true to say the BEQ is the most philosophically orientated. It is certainly the most heavily American in terms of contributors and focus (reflecting, perhaps, the fact that it is the official journal of the US-based Society for Business Ethics (SBE)).

The JBE is both rather more social science orientated and more international, with something of a balance between, North America, continental Europe, the British Isles and, to a lesser extent, the rest of the world in terms of contributors and focus. (There is also an informal connection to the European counterpart of the SBE, the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN), in that papers from the EBEN annual conference are published in a special conference edition of the JBE).

When first established, BE:ER had a rather less academic focus than BEQ or JBE, with many of the articles contributed by practitioners or intended as introductory. However, it has since become very much a mainstream academic journal, publishing a particularly diverse range of articles, with contributions of both a philosophic and social science orientation from business ethics specialists as well as very often including contributions from those who are not business ethics specialists but have a concern with the ethical dimension to the area of business they are academically or professionally concerned with, be it HRM, marketing, finance, or whatever. In terms of contributors and focus it is broadly international, though rather more European than North American, and rather more UK orientated than continental European. (There is an informal connection to the UK division of EBEN, European Business Ethics Network - UK (EBEN-UK), in that papers from the EBEN-UK annual conference are published in a special conference edition of BE:ER).

As the name clearly conveys, JBEE is concerned with the teaching of business ethics. As such it publishes articles on a range of topics relating to pedagogical concerns such as Teaching Methods, Teaching Issues, and Curriculum matters in relation to business ethics. (The JBEE occupies a position previously filled by the journal Teaching Business Ethics which was incorporated into the JBE in 2004 and had published papers from what was an annual Teaching Business Ethics Conference held in the UK.)
