Announced on 22nd October 2007, the winning essays of the Institute of Business Ethics Student Essay Competition in Business Ethics focus on ethical sourcing and the social responsibility of businesses to make a profit. The prize, now in its fifth year, is awarded in association with the Daily Telegraph and EBEN-UK.

The IBE devised the essay competition to encourage student interest in the topic and the teaching of business ethics to those who will form the business community of the future. This year, with a record number of entries, the competition was more challenging than ever before.

The Postgraduate category was won by Laura Holtshausen of Royal Holloway, University of London for her paper: "What is ethical sourcing? What factors are likely to influence the success of ethical sourcing in changing supplier practices?"

The winner of the Undergraduate category was Sarah Jane Coxon of Nottingham University Business School for "A critical analysis of the statement: 'The social responsibility of business is to increase its profits'".

The Director of the Institute of Business Ethics, Philippa Foster Back OBE, said: "The range and quality of entries this year shows that business ethics is being taken increasingly seriously by today's students, and bodes well for the businesses education in the UK."

The winners and representatives from their business schools receivec their prizes from Simon Heffer, Associate Editor of the Daily Telegraph, at an awards ceremony held at the Institute of Business Ethics. 24 Greencoat Place, London SW1P 1BE on Monday 22nd October.
