In
presenting the prizes for the annual IBE/EBEN-UK Student Essay Competition in
Business Ethics, Philippa Foster Back, Director of the Institute of Business Ethics
outlined the motivation for the IBE's joint sponsoring of the award. The essay
competition encourages student interest in the topic and the teaching of business
ethics to those who will form the business community of the future.

The winner of the £500 postgraduate prize was Robert
Bailes from the University of Nottingham for his essay on facilitation payments.
The undergraduate prize of £500 was awarded to a group of students from
Glasgow University; Samantha Byrne, Paul Davey, Kirsti McFarlane, John O'Brien,
Craig Templeton, for their essay, Patent Rights or Patent Wrongs? The Case of
Patent Rights on AIDS Drugs.
Philippa Foster Back urged academic
institutions to take business ethics seriously in the curriculum:
"With
business behaviour under scrutiny, and trust in business at a low, it is vital
that we equip our employees of the future with the tools to deal with the ethical
dilemmas of business life. We look to higher education to deliver graduates to
us who have a degree of ethical acumen as well as business acumen."
