Publications In October, Developing
a Code of Business Ethics: A guide to best practice was published. This report
sets out the rationale for a code of ethics and provides detailed guidance on
how to work with stakeholders to develop and implement a code. It also sets out
how to make it effective. It contains a comprehensive list of issues commonly
covered in company codes and sets out the contents using the IBE Illustrative
Code of Business Ethics that companies can adapt to their own needs. The book
updates Codes of Business Ethics published by the IBE in 1993. D Research The
Institute has a number of potential research projects (see our website www.ibe.org.uk/projects.html.
Some we plan for publication in 2004/5 are: - What have we Learnt?
Supply Chain Issues Three Years On (working title)
Three years after publishing
the IBE Where Did that Come From? publication, What have
we Learnt will investigate the considerable development in approaches to managing
ethical issues in supply chains. - Setting the Tone: Ethical Business
Leadership
Sponsored by ExxonMobil, this report will examine the roles
and responsibilities of business leaders in setting the ethical tone of their
organisations. - Corporate Use of Codes of Conduct (working title)
This
publication will reveal and analyse the results of IBE's fourth survey of corporate
codes of conduct, last published in 2002. It will investigate how companies are
using codes and how corporate approaches to ethics have evolved since 2001.
E Training Two one-day
Introduction to Business Ethics courses have run in
the last six months. The next session will be on 22nd January 2004. The
content, and its format in using 'cameos' to tease out ethical issues is used
as the basis for our in-house training programmes. These can also be tailored
for our corporate subscribers. A number of such programmes are in hand and ongoing. .In
2004, we are responding to feedback from previous course participants by launching
an intermediate training course which
will complement the introductory course. The one day course will focus on developing
and implementing a code of business ethics and is designed for ethics officers
and other individuals who have been tasked with producing or revising a code.
The first intermediate course will take place on Thursday
11th March 2004.
F Advisory Work The Institute continues to
advise companies on their ethical issues and has undertaken a broad range of activities
over the last six months: in-house training; assisting with code development;
'hosting' stakeholder dialogues; advice to professional bodies on ethical training;
advising a trade association on ethical codes. In addition we have been called
upon by members of the media to comment on current issues and several articles
have been written for various journals. G Education In July, we
announced the winners of the IBE/EBEN-UK Student Essay
Competition in Business Ethics 2003. This competition will be held annually,
and winners receive £500. In November
we hosted the IBE/EBEN-UK Teaching Business Ethics Conference which had the theme
of Business Ethics in the Curriculum. Plenary speakers were Professor Sandra Dawson,
Judge Institute, Professor John Stopford, London Business School and Jane Miller,
Severn Trent Water. At the conference we also launched the Teaching
Business Ethics Website, developed in association with EBEN-UK, and providing
resources for teachers and students of business ethics. www.ibe.org.uk/teaching/home.html
