The
Ashridge Centre for Business and Society (ACBAS) is a
leading authority on relations between the corporate sector,
government and civil society, with an emphasis on the
changing role of business. The Centre is part of Ashridge,
the international UK business school and offers tailored
training, advice and consultancy in addition to conducting
its own research.
"The Best Practice Club is a knowledge-sharing network of organisations
dedicated to improving business performance and achieving business excellence".
Established in 1994, this membership organisation helps members research,
identify and implement best practice, while facilitating collaboration between
member companies and providing access to published research.
The BCBE exists to raise the level of awareness and consideration of ethical
issues within the business community in both the formulation and execution of
business policies and strategies. BCBE is a registered charity and is run by an
elected Council of Management drawn from business, the professions, and educational
organisations in the West Midlands
A charity dedicated to helping other charities obtain more support from business.
Business support ranges from cash donations and sponsorship to employee volunteering
and gifts-in-kind. Bcconnections provide an on-line resource centre to assist
in the practical development of business community partnerships, organise local
brokering events and offer training courses.

As an independent business-led charity and membership organisation, the
work of the organisation focuses on responsible business practice making use of
networking opportunities and collaborative action. Community work focuses on various
different social issues and is delivered through a range of initiatives.
Tomorrow's Company is a business led think tank which aims to conduct
research into, and to stimulate the development of, a new agenda for business.
The centre acts as a networking hub for organisations, by identifying and exploring
the future of sustainable success, by undertaking and publishing agenda setting
research and by promoting the adoption of new ideas and concepts.
The Centre, founded in 1988, has its own staff in Cambridge but unites on a
national, European and international basis, university professors, businessmen,
government officials and professionals, such as chartered accountants and bankers.
The Centre undertakes research on issues from police ethics to CSR and corporate
governance.
CSEAR
was established in 1991 as a networking institution to
gather and disseminate information about the practice
and theory of social and environmental accounting and
reporting. CSEAR currently has over 300 members in over
30 countries and publishes a biannual journal: Social
and Environmental Accounting.
Part of the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF), CCInet provides information on
corporate community involvement or investment and details on how CAF's corporate
services department can assist companies in achieving the greatest impact from
their community programmes. The site also contains ideas on best practice, relevant
industry events, and resources for CCI professionals.
Formed by Amnesty International, Christian Aid, Friends of the Earth, the New
Economics Foundation, Save the Children, Traidcraft and the Unity Trust Bank;
CORE highlights failures in current voluntary schemes and campaigns for binding
rules to address Corporate Responsibility.
The Corporate Responsibility Group is made up of 63 of the UK's leading companies
- all of whom have a significant track record of community involvement and corporate
social responsibility. Formed in 1987, the group acts as a forum for corporate
professionals working in the field of community involvement and corporate social
responsibility to discuss relevant issues and enhance business practice. The group
offers master classes, seminars, and jointly runs an annual conference on Corporate
Social Responsibility.
The Department of Trade and Industry's works to create the best environment
for business success in the UK. This department covers issues from best practise
and company law to sustainable development, work-life balance, and women and equality.
The site contains information on the OECD Guidelines, adhering countries
and other national contact points. The guidelines - a voluntary framework of "principles
of good conduct" for international companies in their cross-border business
activities, were first issued in 1976. They are aimed at promoting and developing
a sustainable approach to business conduct and helping to ensure that Multinational
Enterprises (MNEs) act in harmony with the policies of countries in which they
operate and with the principles of corporate social responsibility.
EBEN-UK
was established in 1994 as the UK association of the European
Business Ethics Network. Its purpose is to provide a forum for academics and
practitioners to discuss and debate issues to do with business ethics / corporate
social responsibility. It does this through its own annual conference, an annual
"teaching" conference, occasional regional workshops and by providing
information on resources, other organisations and events that are of interest
to those involved in business ethics.
ECCR is an ecumenical organisation that was formed in 1989 to raise the profile
of corporate responsibility within the churches. ECCR includes within its membership
representatives of many mainstream Christian denominations, corporate agencies
of the churches, religious communities and orders.
The Ethical Investment Research Service provides the independent research into
corporate behaviour needed by ethical investors to enable them to make informed
and responsible investment decisions. EIRIS is a charity set up in 1983 and carries
out independent research providing clients with the information they need to put
their own principles into practice when making investment decisions.

online and print based magazine focusing on business ethics
issues. News, analysis, interviews and extensive information
resources. Ethical Corporation also provides good coverage
of upcoming conferences and events.
A
subscription newsletter for professionals involved in
CSR or SRI. It is the only independent business newsletter
to cover trends in social reporting, corporate governance,
ethical codes of practice, socially responsible investment,
risk and reputation management, and supply chain monitoring.
In addition, 'Ethical Performance Best Practice' and 'Ethical
Performance Company Focus' present examples of best practice
and more in-depth analysis of CSR programmes.

The
Ethical Trading Initiative is an alliance of companies, non-governmental organisations
and trade union organisations that work to promote and improve the implementation
of corporate codes of practice which cover supply chain working conditions.
The Fairtrade Foundation was set up by CAFOD, Christian Aid, New Consumer,
Oxfam, Traidcraft and the World Development Movement in order ensure a better
deal for marginalised and disadvantaged third world producers. The Foundation
awards a consumer label, the FAIRTRADE Mark, to products which meet internationally
recognised standards of fair trade.
Forum for the Future is recognised as the UK's leading sustainable development
charity. The organisation was founded in 1996 by environmentalists Jonathon Porritt,
Sara Parkin and Paul Ekins with the mission to accelerate the building of a sustainable
way of life, taking a positive solutions-oriented approach.
Global Witness is a non-governmental investigative organisation working to
expose the link between natural resource exploitation and human rights abuses.
Global Witness seeks to gather and disseminate information regarding environmental
exploitation and its social, ecological and economic effects.
The GoodCorporation
standard helps organisations to develop, manage and monitor
their corporate responsibilities. Based on a set of core
principles, the standard sets out a framework of policies
and good practices against which an organisation can measure
how effectively it is meeting its goals. It covers practices
towards employees, suppliers, customers, and providers
of finance, as well as community and environmental impacts.
To achieve full membership, organisations are annually
assessed by an independent verifier and must meet minimum
criteria regarding the existence and effectiveness of
management practices.
"Green Alliance's mission is to promote sustainable development by ensuring
that the environment is at the heart of decision-making".
The Green
Alliance was launched in 1979 by a cross-party group of visionary senior figures,
including Lords, judges, lawyers, and MPs. By working with senior people in government,
parliament, business and the environmental movement, the organisation aims encourage
new ideas, dialogue and constructive solutions.
Heart of the City is a joint initiative launched in 2000 by the Bank of England,
the Corporation of London and the Financial Services Authority to encourage City
companies to become more involved in the community and charity work. In addition,
this initiative conducts surveys of existing corporate community involvement as
well as a running programme of showcase events. Heart of the City has now established
itself as a reference point for City firms interested in community involvement
and in the wider area of corporate social responsibility.
"The Institute of Communication Ethics is a not-for-profit membership
network providing education, research and practice for communication ethics".
Membership is open to all practitioners and others wishing to collaborate.
The Institute holds an annual conference and its journal, 'Ethical Space' is available
to both members and non-members.
The Business Leaders Forum is a not-for-profit organisation established in
1990 to promote responsible business practices that benefit business and society
and that contribute to sustainable development. With a membership of over 80 member
companies from around the world, the focus of IBLF work is primarily, but not
exclusively in developing and transitional countries.
The ICA is a non-profit professional organisation
dedicated to the furtherance of best compliance and anti-money
laundering practice in the financial services sector.
The ICA seeks to transcend national boundaries by educating
and supporting compliance and anti-money laundering professionals
globally, through the provision of internationally recognised
qualifications, member information exchange and training.
The IPA is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable
status which specialises in helping companies improve
performance and productivity through employee involvement
and participation. IPA provides a range of services
including consultancy and training, and also conducts
research into employee involvement, disseminating understanding
of good practice and its benefits through regular publications.
JABE works to encourage high standards of integrity
in business and professional conduct by promoting and
teaching the Jewish ethical approach to business. The
association publish 'Integrity Magazine', a regular
publication that explores current workplace ethical
issues as well as hosting seminars and contributing
to the debate in wider society.
The New Academy of Business was founded in 1995
by Anita Roddick to provide entrepreneurs, managers
and organisational leaders with the insights and capacities
necessary to respond to the challenges of sustainability
and organisational responsibility. The New Academy
conducts research, provides networking opportunities
including the Innovation Network for Socially Responsible
Business and works in education including a joint
MSc with Bath University in Responsibility and Business.
The New Academy Review is an international journal
which addresses the strategic and policy issues challenging
business, organisational leaders and managers in the
21st Century. The journal covers issues of ethics and
values, governance and stewardship, and leadership and
entrepreneurship. Corporate citizenship is placed in
the context of sustainability, human rights and equality
issues, while government-business relations, the new
knowledge economy, marketing, finance and logistics
are placed in the context of the contemporary global
environment.
OPM is an independent, not-for-profit, public interest
Company working to develop high quality management,
professional practice and public engagement in organisations
that want to improve their social results. OPM specialise
in organisational development and stakeholder engagement
as well as undertaking public interest research and
offering an extensive range of training programmes.
The SIGMA Project (Sustainability - Integrated Guidelines
for Management) was launched in 1999 with the support
of the UK Department of Trade and Industry. As a partnership
between the British Standards Institution, Forum for
the Future and AccountAbility; Project SIGMA aims to
provide clear, practical advice to organisations to
help them make a meaningful contribution to sustainable
development. Training courses are also offered to implement
the guidelines.
Public Concern at Work is an independent authority
on whistleblowing. Established in 1993, they provide
free help to prospective whistleblowers, advice on whistleblowing
laws and help organisations create a culture where it
is safe and accepted for staff to blow the whistle.
Founded by Global Witness, and NGOs including Oxfam
and Save the Children, the Publish What You Pay campaign
aims to help citizens of resource-rich developing countries
hold their governments accountable for the management
of revenues from the oil, gas and mining industries.
This coalition of over 200 NGOs worldwide calls for
the mandatory disclosure of payments made by companies
to all governments for the extraction of natural resources.
The SMF was established in 1989 as an independent think
tank providing a source of innovative economic and social
policy ideas. The SMF has been an influential voice
in recent health, education, welfare and pensions policy
reform and undertakes several programmes of work leading
to new publications and events.
Established by the Government in October 2000 to act
as an independent advisory body, the commission reports
jointly to Tony Blair and the leaders of the devolved
administrations in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The Commission's role is to advocate sustainable development
across all sectors in the UK, review progress towards
it, and build consensus on the actions needed if further
progress is to be achieved. The Commission is chaired
by Jonathon Porritt with 21 other members, drawn from
business, NGOs, local and regional government and academia
across the United Kingdom
Traidcraft is a Christian organisation that has been
fighting poverty through trade since 1979. As the UK's
leading fair trade organisation, Traidcraft has an active
community of supporters, shareholders, customers, professionals
and producers committed to reducing poverty throughout
the world. The organisation offers almost 300 different
products sourced from more than 100 producer groups
in almost 30 developing countries.
TI (UK) was formed in 1993, shortly after the international
organisation. TI (UK)'s aims were summarised in its
annual report of 1994 as "to raise consciousness
of overseas and local corruption issues within the UK
and support the international campaign of TI".
Hence TI (UK) is concerned first with international
corruption, but also with corruption issues in the UK.
Membership is open to anyone who subscribes to TI's
basic aims.
The UK Business Excellence Awards were launched in
1994 to recognise excelling organisations. The Awards
aim to assist organisational improvement, to identify
role models, to demonstrate what can be achieved and
to recognise those who have shown exceptional ability
and performance in the management of their organisation.
The Award is presented annually to organisations selected
by specially trained assessors and an independent jury.
The UK Social Investment Forum is the UK's membership
network for socially responsible investment (SRI). UKSIF's
primary purpose is to promote and encourage the development
and positive impact of SRI amongst UK based investors.
The Forum was launched in 1991 to bring together the
different strands of SRI nationally and to act as a
focus and a voice for the industry.
UKSIP is the UK member society of the Association for
Investment Management and Research (AIMR), an international,
non-profit organisation of investment practitioners
and academics. UKSIP oversees the Investment Management
Certificate, the UK benchmark examination for individuals
engaged in investment management. It also provides a
range of services to its members with the aim of fostering
and maintaining high standards of professional ability

UK WON is a network of institutions, practitioners

society. Through its research, public commentary, policy
activism and dissemination of good practice, this organisation

Women in Banking and Finance is a non-profit making,
leading professional organisation committed to empowering
its members in the banking and finance industry to realise
their full potential. Founded in 1980, WIBF is solutions
orientated, advising corporations and offering individuals
