A Stewardship Economy: Considerations for Ethical Investment
James Featherby
Thursday 16 May
12:30 - 14:30

Open to All

"Every individual has a responsibility to others as well as to self when choosing where to invest ... We have a responsibility to put our capital to productive use.”

• Is ethical investment too black and white to be of any use?
• Doesn't ethical investment just mean losing money?
• You can't mix making money with doing good, right?

James Featherby, former corporate finance partner of Slaughter and May, is Chair of the Church of England Ethical Investment Advisory Group. James is author of Of Markets and Men: reshaping finance for a new season and The White Swan Formula: rebuilding business and finance for the common good.

The Church of England Ethical Investment Advisory Group (EIAG) makes recommendations on ethical investment policy to the Church of England's three national investing bodies. These are the Church Commissioners for England, the Church of England Pensions Board and the CBF Church of England Funds managed by CCLA. Together they hold assets in excess of £8bn.

James Featherby will discuss the challenges of ethical investment in a frank and open lunch discussion.

The cost is £33 per person (£28 for Institute subscribers). Please register HERE>> and we will send you details how to pay.

Afternoon Discussion
Ethics in the Supply Chain
Peter McAllister, ETI
Wednesday 12 June
15:00 - 17:00

Open to All

As the brand name at the top of the supply chain, companies continue to suffer reputation hits because they were unaware of the unethical labour practices of a supplier or sub-contractor.

With supply chains as long as they are for global companies, even those most conscientious about tackling human rights issues could be vulnerable to criticism if a corner of their operations were to come under close scrutiny.

ETI, the Ethical Trading Initiative, has as its vision a world where all workers are free from exploitation and discrimination, and work in conditions of freedom, security and equity. This year their corporate members' ethical trade activities affected the lives of over 9.8 million workers.

How is ETI realising this vision? What are the challenges and opportunities for business in this area?

Peter McAllister, Executive Director of ETI will discuss these questions.

SuMMER EVENT
Wilful Blindness
Margaret Heffernen
Thursday 11 July
17:30 - 19:30

Open to All

Deepwater Horizon, phone hacking, LIBOR rate fixing, HSBC money laundering, horsemeat, Lance Armstrong and Jimmy Savile – just some recent examples of wilful blindness – that the worst crimes are committed in public where everyone can see them but tries not to.

It is a myth that integrity failures are caused by "a few bad apples” - the truth is that there are multiple failings on the part of individuals who witness wrongdoing but chose to remain silent. According to the results of the IBE’s 2012 GB Ethics at Work Survey of the fifth of British employees who have been aware of misconduct in their organisation in the last year, only half of these (51%) say they have reported it.

But we all like to think we are ethical and we could never behave this way. So what goes wrong?

Margaret Heffernen will explore how willful blindness develops and outline some of the mechanisms, structures and strategies that organisations can use to combat it at the IBE’s Annual Summer Discussion which takes place on Thursday 11th July.  An entrepreneur, Chief Executive and author, she explored this subject in her book Wilful Blindness: Why We Ignore the Obvious at our Peril.

The event will take place in the Hall of India and Pakistan at the Royal Overseas League, Over-Seas House, Park Place, St James’s Street, London SW1A 1LR.  The event will begin at 5.30pm with drinks and canapés for 6.00pm prompt start; it will end at 7.30pm.
