IBE Director wins Sieff Award

The Director of the Institute of Business Ethics, Philippa Foster Back OBE, has won this year’s Marks & Spencer Sieff Award.

The Marks & Spencer Sieff Award is for individuals based in the community who have successfully collaborated with business to benefit society.

Philippa Foster Back has been Director of the IBE for the past seven years and, during that time, the number of companies with codes of ethical conduct has grown dramatically. She also recently served on the committee chaired by Lord Woolf that looked at ethical standards at BAE.

“It is a great honour to received this distinguished award as it recognises the hard work that everyone at the IBE has put into improving levels of ethical behaviour in British business.  It also acknowledges just how important ethics in business has become and how seriously it is taken,” said Ms Foster Back.

Philippa has over 25 years of business experience. She began her career at Citibank NA before joining Bowater in their Corporate Treasury Department in 1979, leaving in 1988 as Group Treasurer. She was Group Finance Director at DG Gardner Group, a training organisation, prior to joining Thorn EMI in 1993 as Group Treasurer until 2000. In 2001 she was appointed Director of the Institute of Business Ethics.

In 2006 she was awarded the OBE for services to the Ministry of Defence where she was formerly a NED and Chair of the Defence Audit Committee.

Her outside interests include the history and exploration of the Polar Regions; she is Chairman of the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

The Marks & Spencer Sieff Award was introduced in 2002 to coincide with Business in the Community’s 20th anniversary and the retirement of pioneering corporate leader and founder member, Sir David Sieff of Marks & Spencer. This Award pays tribute to the long history of corporate community involvement that the Sieff family has promoted.
