WINNERS OF STUDENT ESSAY COMPETITON IN BUSINESS ETHICS ANNOUNCED
Announced today, the two winning essays of the Institute of Business Ethics Student Essay Competition in Business Ethics focus on diverse subjects; the advantages and disadvantages of codes of ethics and a critical analysis of the way Google and Facebook generate profit. The prize, now in its sixth year, is awarded in association with the Daily Telegraph and EBEN-UK.
The essay competition aims to encourage student interest in business ethics and the integration of corporate responsibility issues into the core curricula of business schools.
The Director of the Institute of Business Ethics, Philippa Foster Back OBE, said: “the IBE is delighted at the calibre of the entries this year. They show that an impressive level of debate on these issues is taking place in the UK’s Universities and Business Schools.”
The Postgraduate category was won by Charlotte Durrant from Royal Holloway University of London for her paper examining “What are the advantages and disadvantages of codes of conduct in regulating moral behaviour in business?”
The winner of the Undergraduate category was Michael Hillard of Manchester Metropolitan University Business School for his paper “Do Google and Facebook Unfairly Profit From the Ignorance of Their Users?”
The winners and representatives from their business schools received their prizes from Tim Melville-Ross CBE, Chairman of DTZ and a member of the IBE Advisory Council. Tim Melville-Ross congratulated all those that took part: “With trust in business leaders at an all time low it is now more important than ever that, as the business leaders of tomorrow, today’s graduates possess ethical sensitivity.”
After the winning students had presented their essays, there will follow a panel discussion on the topics they have chosen. Tim Melville-Ross will be joined by Liam Halligan, Chief Economist, Prosperity Capital Management and Economics Commentator, Telegraph Group and Anthony McClaran, Chief Executive of UCAS for this.
